Moose - DescriptionMoose are the largest animals of the deer family. Their weight varies greatly according to their habitat from 500 kg to 700 kg, but the body length is approximately the same - 2.5-2.7 m. Moose are usually over 2 meters high at the shoulders. The Alaskan Moose is the largest; some of these moose reach up to 2.3 meters at height. The coat color of the Moose varies from brown to dusty black depending upon the age of the animals and the season. Young calves are light rusty.Moose have long legs that are of lighter color. The front legs are longer than the hind ones. All Moose have a hump at the shoulders and a long muzzle with drooping lip. The tail of the Moose is small. The Moose has a flap of skin hanging beneath the throat that is called "a bell." The hallmark of these animals is their large antlers. Only males have antlers and their shape is individualized; they differ from animal to animal. The average size of the Moose' antlers is 160 cm, but some individuals have antlers of up to 2 meters in span. The antlers have about 30 spikes. Moose shed their antlers once a year in the winter and replace them with new larger ones. New antlers are formed of living tissue supplied by blood through a soft skin (velvet). The tissue solidifies, the velvet is scrapped off; the antlers are formed of dead matter. The main function of the antlers is to display dominance within the herd and to attract the female Moose during the rut.
