Moose have a stable conservation status and are very common with a population ranging between 500,000 and 1,000,000 animals. Moose hunting is strictly regulated and limited in terms of a season and quantity, so it doesn't have a detrimental effect on the population. Recently, Moose began to spread to areas they have not been populated by them before and are introduced to new habitats in North America. Moose are hunted for meat and for sport and are the focus of eco-tourism activities.

Moose - Threats

Moose are rather difficult to hunt because of their size and sharp hooves. A Moose is capable of stabbing a predator to death, but calves are very vulnerable and are easy prey for wolves, grizzlies and black bears. Studies show that bears can kill up to 75% of small calves in their first 8 weeks. Another problem is the winter tick. Ticks irritate the skin of the animals and make them rub off portions of their hair. If the winter is severe enough, the population of Moose can be reduced to as much as 50%.

Moose - Reproduction

Moose reach sexual maturity at the age of 2 years. The mating season begins in September and lasts to November and the calves are born in May or June. Usually twins are born; a single calve or triplets is rare. Calves of Moose are able to browse at 3 weeks of age and at 5 months they are completely weaned.
