Moose - History

The origin of Moose dates back to about a million of years ago. Their ancestor is an old deer called megaceros, which became extinct about 12,000 years ago. This animal had the antlers of unbelievable size - 3.5 m in span that weighed up to 100 lbs - and this prevented it from living in dense forests.

Moose - Distribution

Moose (Alces alces) inhabit the boreal and subarctic zones of the entire northern hemisphere. They prefer dense mixed forests, taiga and open tundra of Alaska, Canada and northern parts of America. These animals live only in those zones where the average summer temperature doesn't exceed 15 degrees Celsius. In continental Europe, this animal is known as "Elk." "Moose" is an Indian word meaning "eater of twigs."

Moose - Social Structure

Moose are solitary animals and have their own home ranges, but during the rut they gather in herds of a dozen or more. Each group occupies a large area of 300-600 hectares. During the winter Moose stay on higher ground or gather in a snowy area in the forest for mutual protection. Moose live up to 25 years, but due to hunting seldom reach this age.
